OpenAI Cuts Off Cursor After SpaceX Acquisition With Nov. 12 Deadline

OpenAI is cutting Cursor off.

The company has notified SpaceX that it intends to end Cursor’s direct access to OpenAI models on November 12, 2026, following SpaceX’s acquisition of Anysphere, the company behind Cursor.

For developers who rely on GPT models inside Cursor, that puts a clock on something that has become part of their daily workflow.

But Cursor itself isn’t going away. The question is what actually changes when one of the models behind your AI coding workflow suddenly disappears and whether Cursor can move on without OpenAI as easily as it might seem.

Why OpenAI Is Cutting Cursor Off

The reason isn’t simply that SpaceX bought Cursor.

OpenAI is invoking a change-of-control clause in its agreement with Cursor, saying it can no longer be confident that SpaceX will use its technology within OpenAI’s terms of service.

The company pointed to its previous disputes with Elon Musk’s companies, including its claim that X violated their agreement after Musk acquired Twitter. It also referenced Musk’s admission earlier this year that xAI had violated OpenAI’s terms while training its models.

And there’s another important part of the decision: Cursor won’t get OpenAI’s upcoming models either.

That means this isn’t just about losing access to today’s GPT models. OpenAI is also drawing a line under the relationship as future models arrive.

What This Means for Cursor Users

For most Cursor users, the app isn’t suddenly going to stop working on November 12.

The change is much more specific about direct access to OpenAI’s models through Cursor is what is being cut off.

If you already use Claude, Gemini, Grok or another model available in Cursor, your workflow can continue largely as it does today. But developers who have built their workflow around GPT models will have to make a choice.

They can switch to another model, change how they use Cursor, or potentially bring their own OpenAI API key if that remains supported.

And that last option sounds simpler than it really is.

Can Developers Just Bring Their Own OpenAI Key?

Technically, using your own API key can provide another way to access OpenAI models.

But that doesn’t necessarily recreate the experience developers are paying for with Cursor.

Cursor’s value isn’t only the model itself. Its coding workflow also depends on the infrastructure around it including how it handles context, agents, autocomplete and interactions across a codebase.

There is also a cost difference to consider. A subscription can make AI coding expenses predictable, while heavy usage through a personal API key can turn those same workflows into a usage-based bill.

So BYOK may solve the “Can I still access an OpenAI model?” problem.

It doesn’t solve the “Can I keep using Cursor exactly the way I do today?” problem.

And Cursor already has another option: move developers toward the growing list of models it supports from other providers.

Cursor Says OpenAI Was Already Losing Ground

There is one detail that makes OpenAI’s decision a little less damaging for Cursor than it might first appear.

Cursor co-founder Michael Truell has said on X that OpenAI models had already been declining as a share of the platform’s overall usage as developers increasingly turned to other models.

That means Cursor has been moving toward a world where it doesn’t have to depend on a single AI provider.

Claude, Gemini and Grok are already part of the platform’s model lineup, giving developers alternatives when one provider changes its terms or, in this case, decides to walk away.

So while losing direct access to OpenAI models is certainly a disruption, it may also accelerate something Cursor was already doing: building an IDE where the model underneath matters less than the coding environment around it.

And that could be the most important part of this entire fight.

OpenAI May Have Just Made Cursor More Independent

For developers who rely heavily on GPT models, the November 12 cutoff is a disruption. But for Cursor itself, the impact may be more complicated.

The company already has Claude, Gemini and Grok in its ecosystem, and OpenAI models had been making up a smaller share of its overall usage.

If that trend continues, Cursor could come out of this less dependent on any single AI company.

OpenAI wanted to cut off its models from a company now owned by Elon Musk. Instead, it may end up pushing Cursor further toward a model-agnostic future where developers choose the model, while Cursor remains the layer they actually work in.

November 12 will show just how difficult that transition really is.
