Can Twitter.now Survive? The New Twitter Faces a Bigger Problem Than X

A new social network is bringing back the Twitter name and bird, but winning back the internet may be harder than reclaiming the brand.

The bird is back.

After Elon Musk turned Twitter into X, a startup called Operation Bluebird has now launched Twitter.now using the Twitter name, the familiar bird, and an ambitious promise to build a new kind of public square.

But this isn’t really about bringing back an old brand.

Twitter.now says it wants to build something different: a social network centered on trust, transparency, and user choice, where people can decide how much reach different posts deserve instead of leaving everything to an opaque algorithm.

Early access costs $20, and the platform is already offering founding members the chance to claim handles and even become Founder #00001.

The question, though, isn’t whether Twitter.now can bring back the name.

It’s whether it can bring back the people.

Because in social media, having the right name is one thing. Convincing millions of people to leave an established network, rebuild their communities somewhere else, and give a tiny new platform a reason to exist is an entirely different game.

And that’s where its actual challenge begins.

Getting the Twitter Name Back Was Only the Beginning

The name didn’t simply become available overnight.

Operation Bluebird has been fighting over the Twitter identity since X moved away from it. The company argued that X had abandoned trademarks connected to “Twitter” and “Tweet” after Musk renamed the company and retired the brand.

X, unsurprisingly, disagreed and sued to stop the new service from launching.

But in an April hearing, a Delaware judge tentatively indicated that X appeared to have given up some of its intellectual-property claims over “Twitter,” “tweet,” and the Twitter bird logo. A written order has yet to settle the matter completely, but Operation Bluebird treated the ruling as enough of a green light to launch.

So, legally, the door opened.

But that may have been the easy part.

Because a social network doesn’t become Twitter again just because it is called Twitter.

It needs the people who made Twitter valuable in the first place.

Twitter.now Wants to Change What Gets Seen

This is where Twitter.now is trying to make its case.

The platform’s biggest pitch is control over what gets amplified.

Every post is analyzed by VERA, a Gemini-based system designed to check claims, provide context and attach a trust score. Users are then supposed to get more control over what appears in their feed by setting the level of trust they are willing to accept.

The idea is deliberately different from the usual social-media model.

They call it “freedom of speech, not freedom of reach.”

You can say what you want. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the platform has to push it to millions of people.

On paper, that sounds appealing, especially after years of arguments over moderation, misinformation and algorithms that reward whatever keeps people scrolling.

But it also creates an important question.

Can an AI decide what deserves to reach people without becoming the very opaque gatekeeper Twitter.now says it wants to avoid?

But Can AI Really Be Trusted to Decide What You See?

That question becomes even harder once you move beyond the demo.

Social media is full of posts that aren’t simply true or false. A breaking story can be incomplete. A political claim can depend on context. A joke can look like misinformation. Two credible sources can disagree.

That means VERA isn’t just checking facts. It is making judgments about context, credibility and reach.

And those judgments will matter because Twitter.now isn’t merely using AI to recommend posts. It is making trust a central part of how the feed works.

That could be its biggest advantage if it works.

But it could also become its biggest weakness if users start feeling that an AI system, not an opaque algorithm, but an AI one is quietly deciding what they should see.

The platform is therefore making a much bigger bet than simply bringing back the Twitter name.

It’s betting that people will trust its definition of trust.

The $20 Bet Might Be Bigger Than It Looks

There’s another interesting part of Twitter.now’s strategy: it doesn’t want everyone to join yet.

Early access costs $20, while users who want to support the company’s legal fight can pay $40 or more. Founders get their handle, a numbered badge and early access, while the company says the money will help fund both the platform and its fight over the Twitter brand.

That does two things at once.

It brings in money before Twitter.now has to deal with millions of users, and it gives the earliest users a reason to feel like they are part of something rather than simply signing up for another social network.

But there’s a catch.

A few thousand people willing to pay $20 isn’t the same thing as millions of people willing to use the platform every day.

And that is ultimately the test Twitter.now has to pass. Can the nostalgia around Twitter get people through the door?

Can the trust system give them a reason to stay?

And, most importantly, can Twitter.now turn a group of early supporters into an actual network that people don’t want to leave?

Because winning back the Twitter name may be one fight but winning back the Twitter habit could be much harder.

So, Can It Actually Bring Twitter Back?

Maybe.

It has something most new social networks don’t: a story people already recognize. It has the bird, the name, the nostalgia and a direct connection to one of the internet’s most recognizable platforms.

But people are yet to come and there is still another uncertainty hanging over the whole project: the legal fight isn’t necessarily over. The ruling that gave Operation Bluebird confidence to launch was only tentative, so another legal battle could still follow.

Time will tell whether the company can survive both challenges.
